ANALISIS KEMAMPUAN MENULIS ESAI MAHASISWA PROGRAM STUDI PENDIDIKAN AGAMA ISLAM: STUDI KASUS DI UIN SULTHAN THAHA SAIFUDDIN JAMBI

Abstract

Writing proficiency is a crucial skill for students in Islamic Higher Education, enabling them to articulate their understanding of religious values and actively participate in both academic and social spheres. This study examines 80 handwritten essays by students of the Islamic Education Study Program (PAI) at UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Using a mixed-methods approach, the essays were analyzed quantitatively through a rubric assessing content, structure, language use, style, and originality, and qualitatively through thematic analysis. The findings reveal significant deficiencies in students' writing abilities, particularly in grammatical accuracy, creativity, and essay organization. While students performed reasonably well on relatable topics such as mental health challenges, their performance was considerably weaker on more abstract themes such as economic issues. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions, including comprehensive academic writing modules, structured feedback mechanisms, and broader exposure to diverse essay topics. Addressing these challenges is essential for developing critical thinking and effective communication skills, empowering Islamic Education students to engage meaningfully in Islamic scholarship and contribute to societal development.
