Abstract

The importance of understanding history and culture makes a nation have a strong personality and awareness because the purpose of learning is learning a mature life, learning that is able to guide students to think visionary by developing critical thinking, encouraging the formation of students’ character. However, this skill in the subject of Islamic Cultural History (SKI) is not adequate so that student learning outcomes are not optimal. Therefore, classroom action research was conducted to improve student learning outcomes by encouraging critical thinking through the use of inquiry method. The subjects of the study were grade IX students and SKI teacher, the collection of research data was in the form of observation, interview, test, and documentation, then data analysis technique related to the results of observation of teacher and students’ activities, and their learning outcomes. This study concluded that there was an increase in learning process and learning outcomes of students; that  after the second cycle of 20.31%  in teacher activities, the students activities increased by 52.62 %. Meanwhile the results of students  learning also showed an increase from 68.62 (45.45%) to 81.81 (90.9%) or a very good category. Thus, the inquiry method becomes an alternative to support students’ thinking skills and learning outcomes.
